The Whipped Coffee Trend

           The first time I saw whipped coffee, it was the trend on tiktok and like most people at the time, I had no idea what it was. This whipped coffee started in Korea and is instead called Dalgona coffee.  It got the name Dalgona coffee due to its similarities with a particular Korean candy. Regardless of what its called, I became fascinated by whipped instant coffee. Its magical how it becomes so fluffy and creamy right in front of your eyes.

           I don’t know why, but I became fixated and tried various other methods to get it to work. My first attempt was a success by mixing a 1:1:1 ratio of sugar, hot water, and instant coffee. But deep down, I wanted to tinker with the whipped coffee and create something fun. I prefer the rich and deep flavors of regular coffee instead of instant coffee. And by instant, I mean I wanted to grind some of my favorite arabica coffee beans. In my head, this would of made the whipped coffee taste 100 times better. But in the culinary life, things don’t always pan out the way I envision them.

The Power of Instant Coffee

           When I tested with regular coffee, I kept whipping the coffee hoping that I would get the same effects. Unfortunately, after 30 minutes of optimism, my efforts yielded no results.  I even tried this with green tea matcha instead hoping I’d get some success, but my experiment again failed. Both versions did make the mixture a tiny bit more creamy, but it was still nothing spectacular. I thought this would be as simple as making fried rice that can easily accommodate various flavors like garlic or spicy

           It seems there’s something in instant coffee that allows it to hold the air inside when its whisked. From the three types I tried, only instant coffee can whips into a creamy and air-filled texture.  and not with regular coffee or other flavors.

Variations of Whipped Coffee

 

           Yet, its still possible to whip other flavors into the same texture. If you did wanted to make other flavors, you could follow the steps of making meringue or whipped cream. All you would have to do is add the flavors in after and whisk it together. But then what would be the point of making this trendy coffee? Half the fun is watching how instant coffee changes to something completely different.

Instructions

Making the Whipped Coffee

  • Boil hot water and add an ounce of water, an ounce of instant coffee, and 1/2 ounce of sugar into a mixing bowl. 
  • Simply whisk with a hand mixer for about 5 minutes.
  • The coffee mix will slowly change its form.
  • It’ll start to bubble and slowly lighten in color.
  • The longer you whisk it, the more air is built into it and the creamier and lighter it gets.

Making the Boozy Milkshake

  • Simply add the ice, milk, yogurt, rum, and vanilla extract to a blender and blend until its well mixed.
  • Add more ice if you want it thicker or more rum If you want a stronger alcohol content.

Finishing Touches

  • Drizzle chocolate syrup around the rim of the glass and then let it drip down to the bottom of the glass.
  • Fill the cup 4/5th of the way full. Then add the dalgona coffee to fill up the rest of the cup. 

Boozy Milkshake with Whipped Coffee

           What i did succeed in creating was an adult version of the trendy whipped coffee. Instead of using milk like everyone else did. i created a non-sweet, boozy milkshake. Alcohol is always welcomed during dark times. And in dark times, I mean being stuck at home due to the CoVid-19. 

           A milkshake usually includes ice cream that makes it sweet. But, the concentrated whipped coffee is sweet enough by itself. So to balance it out, I needed something more mellow to balance it out so I decided to create a milkshake with no sugar.  It sounds weird a first, but it’s the same reason everyone mixes it with milk. You wouldn’t add the whipped coffee to condense milk, unless you want to drink is sugar. In fact, I tend to prefer things less sweet than normal, so I halfed the amount of sugar to in the suggested ratio of 1:1:1. It would be so sweet, it would be hard to enjoy.  In fact, its even more amazing when its infused with alcohol, giving you a nice kick with each sip. 

Detailed Instructions - Boozy Whipped Coffee

Making this drink is quite simple. It only requires 3 ingredients – instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. My boozy milkshake just needs greek yogurt, milk, ice, vanilla extract, and spiced rum. An added addition would be to include chocolate syrup (not necessary).

Making the whipped coffee is as simple as adding all the ingredients together. The main ingredient is the instant coffee. The sugar is the sweetener and the hot water is to melt everything so it can mix well.

It might seem strange at first, especially since the portion is so small, but all you have to do is whisk the instant coffee for a few minutes. You can use a hand whisk, but that might leave you quite sore. It starts to bubble at first and that’s a sign its working.

The airy bubbles continually mixes with the coffee and slowly becomes whipped. The volume increases and the color turns lighter. It takes about 5 minutes and you’ll know you’re done when its as light as I have pictured above. And that’s all you need for whipped coffee. 

Others that followed the trend usually plops the whipped coffee on top of regular milk to drink, but I wanted something else. The boozy milkshake is simple to make as well. Just add the yogurt, milk, ice, vanilla extract, and rum to a blender and blend. You can do without the vanilla extract, but I felt it gives it a nice subtle touch. 

Optional would be to drizzle chocolate syrup all around the rim of your glass. Its not necessary, but definitely adds to the depth of the taste. 

Simply pour in the boozy milkshake into the glass and add the whipped coffee on top afterwards. Its definitely a treat if you’re locked indoors or just need something delicious, creamy and boozy to de-stress.

Enjoy with a straw by mixing well together or even a spoon to get a taste of all the flavors at once.
